Focus On What You Control
The PREDATOR MINDSET is about focusing on what you can control and eliminating distractions from what you cannot. It's the difference between being a hunter and being hunted.
"The difference between a predator and prey is where they focus their attention."
Most wrestlers struggle not because they lack physical skills, but because they have a prey mentality. They focus on external factors they cannot control, which creates anxiety, self-doubt, and poor performance.
Prey animals in nature are constantly scanning for threats, always defensive, always worried. When you wrestle with a prey mindset, you're doing the same thing — worrying about your opponent, the fans, the ref, the bracket, and a hundred other things you can't control.
Wrestlers with prey mentality have a tendency to Focus On Externals (F.O.E.). There are three main categories where wrestlers lose their mental edge:
Being overly concerned with what spectators, parents, or coaches think about your performance. This creates pressure and makes you wrestle not to lose instead of wrestling to win.
Spending too much mental energy focused on your opponent — their record, their reputation, their technique. When you focus on them, you're not focused on executing your game plan.
Getting distracted by external circumstances — the ref's calls, the mat conditions, the tournament format, seeding, or any other factor outside your control.
Predators don't waste energy worrying about things they can't control. They focus exclusively on:
Maximum intensity in every moment
Positive mindset regardless of circumstances
Relentless attack and killer instinct
You cannot control your opponent, the fans, the ref, or the circumstances. But you CAN control your effort, your attitude, and your aggressiveness. That's where champions focus their attention.
