INTRINSIC VS EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION

The Fuel of Champions

Listen to Lesson 4

There are two types of motivation: extrinsic (external rewards) and intrinsic (internal drive). Champions are fueled by intrinsic motivation.

Extrinsic Motivation

Wrestling for external rewards:

  • • Trophies and medals
  • • Approval from parents/coaches
  • • College scholarships
  • • Social status and popularity
  • • Proving others wrong

Problem: When rewards disappear, so does motivation.

Intrinsic Motivation

Wrestling for internal reasons:

  • • Love of competition
  • • Personal growth and mastery
  • • Testing your limits
  • • Brotherhood and team culture
  • • Becoming your best self

Power: This motivation never runs out.

Why Intrinsic Motivation Is Superior

1. It's Sustainable

External rewards come and go. Internal drive is permanent.

2. It Builds Mental Toughness

When you wrestle for yourself, adversity can't break you.

3. It Creates Joy

Wrestling becomes fulfilling regardless of outcomes.

📝 EXERCISE: Find Your Why

Complete this sentence: "I wrestle because..."

[ Dig deep. What truly drives you? ]

🎯 KEY TAKEAWAY

External rewards are nice, but they won't sustain you through the grind. Find your intrinsic motivation — the internal fire that burns regardless of trophies or recognition.
